How to Store Items Properly in Your Garage
Date Posted: 31 March 2021
Garage cleaning day: that one day of the year when home organisation overwhelms you and leaves you feeling helpless. You look to one corner and there are boxes of old books; you look in another and there’s a mass of old cooking appliances that you have probably had stored there since the day you moved in.
How do I organise my garage?
The endless wealth of underused goods we keep in our garages can be enough to cause distress - but it doesn’t have to be this way. Garage organisation and creating extra space is doable when well planned and executed with the right garage storage solutions at your disposal.
Here are a few garage storage tips so that you can organise your space with ease and efficiency.
Ensure you have the time to do it
If you’re someone who has allowed your unnecessary items to build up over the years then there is a good chance you are going to need some time to organise them properly. This job can take anywhere from two hours to a whole day, so ensure you have the time to conduct a proper organisation.
Tidy up the garage
The best way to start organising your garage is to look at what items you have and organise them according to size. This makes it easier when you need to access them in the future and won’t restrict access to smaller and bigger items. An effective storage system can help hold on to the smaller items that might otherwise be forgotten over the course of time.
Get rid of what you don’t need
Obviously, there are going to be some items you don’t need anymore. The best way to clear up your garage is to get rid of the stuff you don’t need anymore or that has been upgraded. There are three piles you should create in your space:
- Items to keep.
- Items to donate.
- Items to throw in the garbage.
Begin organising
It’s time to organise your garage. This is a good way to go about it:
Draw a map
Mapping out your garage will make it easy to organise what goes where. Draw the garage layout and complete it with your goods and what should go where. Trial and test different storage designs so that you can truly optimise the space when implementing the layout.

Wall space & cabinets
Don’t forget to take advantage of wall space and heavy-duty cabinets. Things like hooks, shelves, cabinets and racks allow you to easily access and view your items so that you can grab them whenever you need them.
Finally, make sure you label all boxes so you know exactly what is in them - you never know when you might want something from them. You can either use cardboard boxes (which are sturdy and reliable) or plastic tubs (which are flimsier but more transparent) - it just comes down to personal preference.
